As I have returned back to my usual routine after the conference, I have been thinking about writing this piece to share my experience as a newcomer to constructivism. I have found myself feeling nervous about doing justice to the piece in capturing others sentiment of the experience, but remembering this was a constructivist conference I regained a sense of calm remembering I am the only one who can get this one right. The conference started for me slightly different from previous professional gatherings in that I took organizers up on the offer to be paired with attendees (to reduce costs by splitting a hotel room). Therefore I expected to meet my first fellow constructivist at the hotel, but after exiting the airport I was greeted by a friendly group of attendees, who were still in good spirits after waiting for over an hour for the shuttle to arrive. Rather than being grumpy after traveling all day, there was some acknowledgement of the frustration, with the conversation quickly moving to being interested in learning more about the other members of the waiting party. |

The dialogue continued during the shuttle ride to the Grand Plaza, and by the time we arrived at the hotel I already felt I had made my first connection to other constructivists. The Keynote address delivered by Dr. Mair was of course nothing less then outstanding and his passion for understanding and helping left me knowing I was in the right place. Rather than viewing Psychology as a cold place filled with only rationalism, he encourages practitioners to let the “magic” enter into the experience and recognizes that our language speaks more than we speak ourselves. I attended various sessions all of which were well presented, and what stood out even more was the openness of the audience. Rather than listening with a suspicious ear to discern any dissonance with current ideas, attendees would inquire about novel ideas with inquisitive suggestions. Roundtable discussions were also inviting of new ideas, though several participants were concerned about the lack of a round and any table. |
